As presently as I heard that Lester and Reba were working on this book, I knew I had to have information technology. And so, when I heard it was almost to exist released, I ordered two copies, one for myself and one to share. Now I wish I ordered twoscore, one for each of the teachers in my school.This is a professional person evolution book that teaches teachers to apply read alouds finer to teach students about bullying. With the gentleness of the man oftentimes quoted throughout the book (Fred Rodgers), Lester and Reba lead the reader to an agreement of 5 layers of agreement and awareness about bullying, from general to specific, with a chapter spent on each layer.
The layers are: LAYER one: Getting Started: We Have and then Much in Common, LAYER 2: Moving In: There are ways in which nosotros are dissimilar- non less than others, not improve than others, but different, LAYER three: Inside the Circumvolve - Understanding that how we respond to differences is continued to our beliefs, thoughts, and feelings about differences. LAYER 4: At the Cadre: When others are not thoughtful, caring, and kind and LAYER 5: Getting Focused for Activity - An opportunity to explore the actions of others, reverberate on our own feelings, and redirect our behaviors toward fellow human being beings. (from figure 1.ii - pages 8 and 9).
Whatever you lot do, don't skip the introduction to this book. In it, Lester and Reba practise an incredible chore of explaining what is at the core of bullying behavior, how bullying is manifested, the players in a bullying scenario (including bystanders), signs to look for to determine whether someone is existence bullied and an explanation of why victims don't often speak upwardly.

The authors likewise acknowledge that there may be many more books that tin can be used at any level, and encourage teachers to use them.

Thank you lot Lester and Reba. This book is a jewel of precious value. I hope many districts will discover information technology and see that and adopt it for use. I can't buy the 40 copies I demand, but I will practice my part in spreading this gem to others so that it gets in many more hands. I don't have my own form of students to work with through this, but you can be certain I volition be ordering many of the recommended books so that I accept them bachelor to loan out to the teachers who come my manner asking if I have them.

Lester and Reba do a fantastic job of balancing an approach with a new climate of CCSS with their recommendations and how each recommendation supports CCSS while building community.I really like how Lester and Reba address all of the parties in the bullying equation. The get-go chapter of the book is most enlightening as the authors take some fourth dimension to define and explain each chemical element.

This book is for teachers who come across the subversive effects of bullying...on the bullied, the corking, and the bystander. Using children's literature as their tool, the authors give a pattern of lessons to be used in elementary classrooms, to lead discussions about the human condition which are also rooted in ELA standards...in this example CCSS. The authors may want to revise the standards portion of the book, every bit more than and more states back abroad, but the true message of this book is NOT CCSS.All the lessons are grounded in the authors v layers of understanding near what it is to be human: We are alike; but at that place are differences; how we respond to differences reveals our beliefs; our differences make u.s.a. neither more or less than others; we own our thoughts and attitudes and deportment. They prove how each layer adds new elements and builds systematically from the earlier ones.
With that as the framework, the bulk of the book is lessons...once more, systematically presented using the same pattern of activities for each picture book. The lesson blueprint is presented and modeled. Extension activities are included.
I love the visual literacy introduction of each volume...the teacher is to guide a 'visual tour' of the volume, carefully keying into the elements that support the theme of the story...and then the teacher reads aloud, with directions to 'mind for...think about.' When the class has read the book, the instructor asks students to recall on your own...thirty seconds of silence. Then talk with a partner, stretching thinking. Finally partners share new thinking about the book, creating bumper sticker slogans to reverberate the theme...Easily managable for a instructor, and exhibiting corking practices to incorporate in the book. Models of open-ended questions run throughout.
Students are invited to "sit down with the language for a few seconds" and invited to "sit with those thoughts for a moment." The language of invitation really appeals to me. It respects kids as thinkers.
That lesson outline is twenty-four hours #1...if teachers accept the time to revisit, there are more activities to extend the thinking, and link to the next book.
The appendix is valuable -- community-building activities (once again, the authors tap correct into my own belief organisation: the classroom must be a prophylactic place for kids. At that place are resource and links for educators, as well as a list of more books that could be used to foster conversations.
The classrooms envisioned in this volume would be so important for students to acquire the attitudes of community, caring, respect, support.
IF I have a 'beef' information technology's that the books are all lower elementary...with some affiliate books. I would love to see the authors...or someone else extend these lessons, and include more YAL literature...I understand the difficulties of longer works, merely teens demand these lessons equally much as little ones.

If it says Lester Laminack on the cover, I'm going to try it. Lester was built-in July 11, 1956 in Flint, Michigan. His mom and dad had left their families in Alabama and moved to Michigan where his dad, Jimmy, worked for GM. But Michigan is long way from Alabama when you have a ii yr sometime and a brand new baby. So, just two weeks after Lester was born his parents packed everything and moved back to their hometown, Heflin, Alabama. They wanted Lester and his brother Scott to grow up near grandparents, aunts and uncles and lots of cousins.
When Lester was 6 the family moved again. This time to Zachary, LA where Lester attended part of 1st and all of 2nd form. And so they moved back to Heflin where he completed 3rd class and 4th grade. In Apr of 1966, while he was in the 4th grade, Lester's sister, Amanada, was built-in. She was so picayune when they brought her home that he had to hold her on a pillow. Every day when he came habitation from schoolhouse he held her and told her stories. Some people remember that's why he is a author. Lester and Amanda take always been very shut even though he is 10 years older.
When Scott was in the 7th grade and Lester was in the fifth course and Amanda was only ane twelvemonth old the family unit moved again. This fourth dimension it was to Key W, FL. They lived there under a twelvemonth before moving dorsum to Alabama.
